How to care for wool coats and jackets

One of the most frequently asked questions that we get is "how do I care for my wool/cashmere coat?"

Wool coats are pretty low maintenance. Unlike synthetic fabrics, wool has natural anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties.  It doesn't require much cleaning to keep it looking clean and fresh.

During the colder seasons we reach for our winter coats.  This is your chance to make a lasting impression.  This being said, your outerwear is the first thing and sometimes the only thing that everyone sees you wearing.   You want to make sure that you look and feel your best because when you look good, you feel great!

Below you will find some tips on how to keep your wool coat looking and feeling new.

We recommend using a lint brush to dislodge any dirt or dust from the natural "pile" on the wool.  Lint brushes usually have arrows on the handle.  Make sure that the arrows are pointing downwards and that you are brushing in a downward direction.  Never brush against the natural "pile of the wool" as this will lift its natural

If you wear your coat daily during the winter season, it is recommended that you have your coat dry cleaned at least once the end of the season.  It is important that you take your coat to a reputable dry cleaner.  The dry cleaner should be made aware of any trim, fur or leather and whether it's genuine or faux. Dry cleaning will not damage or shrink your coat. DO NOT TRY TO WASH YOUR COAT as there are many components to it like interfacing, chamois and lining that will become damaged. 

If your wool coat is not worn frequently, then we recommend dry cleaning every other year.

If your coat is in need of repair, it is recommended that it repaired immediately and prior to dry cleaning not to worsen any damage.  You can bring it to us as we are experts in outerwear repair.  

We recommend storing your coat on a hanger, hanging, sealed in a garment bag. Give your coat room in your closet to prevent wrinkles or flattening.
